The town of Bauline is just a short drive from our home in Torbay, I go there sometimes to see the sun set over Conception Bay. Today the harbour there was filled with ice, just like all the harbours I saw on yesterday’s drive, and yes, there was a seal present, not too far from the dock.ย Here are some pictures.
This is what you look for when you do a seal check, just a black shape that looks out of place:
Here’s a close-up:
All this harbour ice really isn’t confined to the harbours anymore, it’s extending out to sea, but clinging to the coastline:
And here’s two more shots, before I had to leave:
Beautiful. I’ve seen Grey Seals off Bauline but never Harp Seals. Great place to see Whales, Bald Eagles, Dolphins, Moose and Coyotes.
Thanks Mark ๐
I would love to get a good look at a coyote some time. So far, I’ve only seen glimpses of them on the trail, they’re so shy and quick.
Hi Mark, Great Pictures! I used to live across the street from you in Toronto. I now have a house in Bauline & understand you now live in Torbay.
Mark, I am on instagram which has a good chat.

Hi Mark, I am not on Instagram but wife & son just arrived so I’ll have them look into it. We are at 10 Main Steet (next to the Church) it would be great to see you and catch up some time. Feel free to pop by if you like. Or, we could come to you? Feel free to text (I do that)!
Cheers

YAY…….love seeing the seal. Great sunset too.
Thanks Marian, the sunsets are often beautiful over Conception Bay ๐
Man! That should be one hell of a camera. There’s no doubt that you’re a good photographer but would you mind if I asked what kind of camera and model you’re using? I’m planning to buy another one and I welcome everyone’s idea. Thanks.
Thanks Jacob, glad you liked the pictures ๐
I use a broad range of cameras, each of them good for some things but never for all things. For these kinds of shots with high magnification I usually use my wife’s Nikon D7000 with a 500mm on a tripod. That tripod is where the real advantage comes in, I would never be able to get these levels of detail by just handholding that lens.
Also, that seal shot is a tight crop, there’s much more ice in the uncropped picture.
Good luck ๐
Wow!
Thanks Taliesin ๐
I hope we haven’t seen the last of the sea ice with this storm blowing it all away…
This is early for any sea ice. Usually when the ice makes it down this far I’ve see it in late March and April as part of spring break-up. It seems to be a rare occurrence these last 10 years. When flying to Toronto the week before last I saw a lot of sea ice in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. First time I have ever seen the gulf look like land. It took me a little while to realize we were actually over the gulf. The ice had new snow on it so at first it looked like fields. The south coast was all open and blue but the gulf was blocked with ice. It was like that from Bay of Islands right across to Mirimichi.
Yes I’ve heard about that, a birding enthusiast from Gros Morne reported seeing shore to shore ice between Newfoundland and mainland Canada. One day later, after the big storm with high wind, it was all open sea again.
This weekend’s storm will no doubt have a big impact on all the ice we’ve been seeing lately.
The storms here, especially winter storms, are like no other place on earth save for the Cape of Good Hope. Winds 120k tonight.
