December 2008 was the month I moved to Newfoundland, and because it’s so close to 2009 I’ve included it here in this 2009 overview.
Our very first month in Newfoundland was all about moving in, filling out paperwork, and exploring the forest trails close to our new home. This photo shows Marije on the frozen East Coast Trail near Stiles Cove:

January was about adapting to tricky winter driving conditions and about exploring the snowy trails near Cape Spear.

In February I discovered the massive icicle walls along Middle Cove beach, and explored them both during the day and at night.

March gave us a landscape sparkling with freezing rain, on a scale we had never seen before in our mild Dutch winters.

April was all about hiking and looking for icebergs, they were still far away this early in the season and you had to get lucky to see them up close.

May was about the onset of spring and exploring the East Coast Trail in all new places, like here near Bay Bulls where icebergs were melting in the bay.

June was the start of summer, half the month was foggy, the other half was so sunny I managed to get a tan on my East Coast Trail hikes.

July was all about waiting for capelin, they rolled in very late in July and unfortunately Marije missed the arrival by just 1 day…

August was about watching whales with Rogier. We saw them from shore mostly, not from our kayak, so this photo has been edited to more closely reflect his expectations.

September started off the fall season and I enjoyed a trip from the Bonavista Peninsula to Gros Morne National Park with my mom.

October brought the first storm of the season with waves crashing into the shoreline, it also brought fall colours to Bowring Park.

November was a mild extension of the fall season, I saw jumping brown trout in Bowring Park and explored a lot of new places close to home.

December marked the end of our first year in Newfoundland. Weather-wise, December was all about the sudden onset of winter and its hasty demise into a spell of lukewarm days that quickly melted winter wonderland again.
