In summer, the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve is the domain of Puffins and Murres. Those charming birds are far away from their summer home right now, spending the winter out on the open ocean.

In winter, the islands in the reserve are abandoned and covered with snow, serving as a backdrop for another kind of bird: the Common Eider. I see these large sea ducks every year from January to March, they gather in large groups that from a distance resemble a single file of birds on the water:
