In summer, the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve is the domain of puffins and murres. Those charming birds are far away from their summer home right now, preferring to spend their winter out on the open ocean.
In winter the islands in the reserve are abandoned and covered with snow and ice, serving as a cold backdrop for another kind of bird: the common eider. I see these large sea ducks every year from January to March, they gather in large groups that from a distance resemble a single file of birds on the water:
