Last night I had two companions in the Western sky looking on as I was driving home, I stopped the car for a second and took this picture of them:

Yesterday's near conjunction of Jupiter and Mercury - Cape Spear Drive

Yesterday’s near conjunction of Jupiter and Mercury – Cape Spear Drive

Today the two planets are in conjunction, which doesn’t mean very much to us but perhaps you’ll find it worthwhile to have a look this evening. Look to the West within an hour after sunset, the dimmer of the two planets will be Mercury.

Jupiter has been visible all winter long, it’s vastly further away but still appears brighter and larger in the sky than our closer neighbour Mercury due to its enormous size.

If you’ve got a pair of binoculars, use them for a better view.
